After a scientific attempt to communicate with aliens, the aliens respond by sending a few scout ships to earth, but when they come they land in the ocean and deploy a shield to protect them how ever few destroyers get trapped inside that shield cut out form the main fleet.
The funny thing is the aliens didn't show any immediate threat to any one but they did attack any thing that they detected any threat from and well humans being humans saw those aliens as a threat and attacked.
The battle ship is about how a crew of modern destroyer kicks a well armed alien ship using a WW2 battle ship.
